The Show

The life of Duke Paoa Kahanamoku

Native Hawaiian actor, writer and storyteller Moses Goods ("Chief of War," "RESCUE HI-Surf," "NCIS Hawaiʻi," "Inhumans," etc.) brings to life one of the most important and beloved figures in Hawaiian history in his acclaimed one-person show, "Duke."

Through this poignant and powerful play, Goods portrays the remarkable life of Duke Paoa Kahanamoku — Hawaiʻi's first Olympic gold medalist, the father of modern surfing, and an enduring symbol of aloha, humility, and the resilience of the Hawaiian people.

About the Play & Tour

Rare Performances | Musical Storytelling

This tour marks the first time "Duke" has been presented in Hawaiʻi since 2019, including debut performances on Kauaʻi and Hawaiʻi island. "Duke" premiered on Oʻahu in 2015 with over 10,000 people attending a show over its 5-week run.

Live musical performances will precede each show, featuring wonderful musicians and deepening the story of Duke Paoa Kahanamoku, his place in Hawaiian history and his continuing influence on Hawaiʻi today.

˖ ݁♬⋆ Musical sets by: The Liliʻu Project on Oʻahu, Kauaʻi and Maui; Native Hawaiian singer-songwriter and cultural practitioner Hāwane Rios opening in Hilo; and Waimanalo's Tiara Gomes opening both Kauaʻi shows.

The Liliʻu Project

featuring John Signor, Starr Kalāhiki and Honybal Sosa

Prior to the presentation of "Duke" on Oʻahu, Kauaʻi and Maui, The Liliʻu Project will perform — exploring the musical legacy of Queen Liliʻuokalani, one of Hawaiʻi's most prolific and significant haku mele and the Hawaiian Kingdom's last reigning sovereign.

Duke was born a citizen of the Kingdom under her rule and learned to swim one year after the overthrow of the Kingdom and Queen. In 2015, Moses Goods commissioned The Liliʻu Project to compose and record the score for "Duke." This summer, John Signor, Starr Kalāhiki and Honybal Sosa reunite with Goods, performing mele composed by or for Queen Liliʻuokalani.
