The world’s greatest living soul singer, Lee Fields, and his band step into 3025 Walnut Street and the shoes of the Holmes Brothers and take us to the river.

This is a classic Late Night at Zete party, in spirit and timing, and is open to all.

Why Lee Fields?

Lee is a powerhouse entertainer with a golden voice, and he epitomizes the might and beauty of The Holmes Brothers who anchored Zete Psi’s grandest celebrations every year for over a decade. And just like The Holmes Brothers, Lee grew up in the south before moving to New York City where he polished his talent through years of dedication and work, eventually gaining worldwide acclaim. Lee has another connection to the Holmes Brothers in that he has continued to live in the New York region after finding success. His journey to Philly on 9/30 is a classic Late Night at Zete musical pilgrimage.

Show producer Mark Tarone first heard Lee perform in April 2012 at One Eyed Jacks in New Orleans at a concert Tarone hails as one of the best of his life. The show was literally wall to wall smiles, Lee’s singing filling the room with connection and joy.

Case in point: as Tarone walked back into the club from the loo with a full Paulaner draft in hand, he hit a roadblock of bodies. While pausing for a chain gang of people to exit the pack so that Tarone could power in, he received an unprovoked shove, spilling a large portion of his beer on his chest. The person behind Tarone had lost his patience with the traffic jam and jacked Tarone from behind. Tarone spun around and nearly snapped but fortunately, refrained from escalating things. Instead, Tarone pushed thru the crowd and went to the bar to order a new drink and reset.

A few minutes later, the provocateur walked over, “I’m sorry. Please let me buy you a beer. . . I was a gangbanger in LA and owned every one of Lee’s records. When we were pushing our way through the crowd, Lee played the song I had on in my car when my friend was shot in the head and died in my lap. I escaped gang life and moved to Texas. I drove all the way here from Houston with my girlfriend to hear that song.” Lee’s got the power.

Caliph Gamble and Sons of Legends Foundation are building on this legacy by helping bring the music and PIR story to new audiences. “The Message is the Music.” – Philadelphia International Records

Local retailer and soul music champion, Brewerytown Beats, will be onsite with classic Philly Soul records available for viewing and purchase including recent re-issues brought back to life by Brewerytown’s Max Ochester. Lee Fields vinyl records and merch will also be available.
