"I didn’t see anyone at the [SXSW 2019] festival doing anything close to what she [Taimane] does on stage. She shreds on ukulele and rocks everything from Beethoven to Led Zeppelin. Somehow she manages to not only rock out but connect the audience with meaningful Hawaiian traditions and dances." - Austin American-Statesman
HAWAIKI - A MUSICAL & THEATRICAL ODYSSEY
On August 25, 2023, Taimane presented “Hawaiki,” a musical and theatrical odyssey at the historic, 1,400 capacity Hawai‘i Theatre Center. The sold out show generated generated nearly $60,000 of box office revenue and received rave reviews from concert-goers. Taimane scored and produced the performance which featured a grand ensemble and delivered a feast for the senses and soul. Music, dance, costume, aerial acrobatics and spoken word transformed Hawai’i Theatre’s 100-year-old stage into a mystical orb and transported attendees to Polynesia’s spiritual home.
“Hawaiki” is known throughout Polynesia as the place where the souls of Pacific islanders originate and return and where Gods and Goddesses live. Hawaiki is also the title of Taimane’s latest album on which she tells the story of a young woman, Maluhia, thrust into a wild adventure across the island’s shores and deep into its caves and underworld. Through encounters with Kanaloa, Savea and other deities, Maluhia’s eyes awaken, finding her mana and freeing her spirit to soar.
At Hawai‘i Theatre Center, this story came to life through vibrant colors, sounds, words and motion with multiple artists performing poetry, as well as aerial, Polynesian and modern dance, all sharing Taimane’s interpretation and vision of the story of Hawaiki.
In December 2023, Hawai‘i News Now broadcast Hawaiki on KHNL (NBC), KGMB (CBS) and K5 and made the show available for free, online streaming here.
